Western Caribbean Cruise

Kurt is home from Iraq! We decided to take a cruise to celebrate his homecoming and our anniversary. We went on the Carnival Cruise "Legend" ship across the Western Caribbean to Cayman Islands, Cozumel Mexico, Isla Roatan Honduras and to Belize. We had a great time!
Enjoying a cup of coffee on our balcony on a day at sea. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony at night with the stars above and nothing but the sound of waves below - talk about serenity. Yum, yum... we did NOT go hungry on this cruise. There was food everywhere, all the time...
Our first stop was in the Cayman Islands. We were very surprised to see this banner flying high above us as we walked down one of the streets there. Kurt was impressed :)
It was amazing how clear and blue the water was. I was taking pictures of water the entire time. Here, you can see the stingrays that we got to swim with. We took our underwater camera and have some better shots with us holding the stingrays but these will have to do until the others are scanned. :)The water was so BLUE! It was beautiful! Kurt and I at dinner. We were seated with a couple that was on their honeymoon and the four of us had a blast together! Our next stop was in Cozumel, Mexico. We went to a private beach and had access to their kayaks, wall climbing/inflatable water slides, hammocks, volleyball, etc. It was great!
Captain's Night: Isla Roatan, Honduras:
I loved how BLUE the water was - have I mentioned that yet? They had professional portraits on the ship so we went ahead and had a couple photos taken one night. Enjoying an evening on the deck, and ready for some amazing food :) Here we are in Belize, where we visited the Mayan Ruins. We climbed to the top and could see Guatemala, which was just about a mile away.

Ghana, Africa

I just got back from my first mission trip to Ghana. This trip was amazing in so many ways. When I left, I was really craving to see God alive and moving in the world. I was able to see this on so many levels in Africa. A large part of what we did, was to travel to villages out in "the bush", villages so desolated that there weren't even roads leading there, they lived in mud huts with thatch roofs... and they had never before heard the name of Jesus Christ. We would have to get permission from the village chief to talk to his tribe and then, we would walk out and gather all the people together and after they had all gathered, we would (through translators) share God's love with them and His plan of salvation. Here is America, people might roll their eyes at this because they had heard it a million times before... there, they were captivated. They heard this news as God had intended.. it was GREAT NEWS! When asked who wanted to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior, they would raise BOTH hands! AmAZinG! Here we are at the river, baptizing new believers in Christ. This was awesome in itself because we had not intended to plant a church there, but so many people from neighboring villages stood and watched and when one of the guys explained to them what was taking place, they decided they wanted to know this "Jesus" too... and so right then, they chose a leader and a place to build their church! Wow...We also held Vacation Bible School. We were told to expect 300-500 children that were going to be bused in from surrounding villages. We came prepared with games, crafts, puppets, snacks... or so we thought. Guess how many children showed up? 1000-1500!!!! Yet another "God Thing". We didn't plan on that, but He did.It was absolutely amazing what happened there. At first, I wondered if the people really understood what they were committing to. I wondered if they just raised their hands because everyone else was... but then when you see them deciding where they want their church and who will lead them and that leader will have to bike many, many miles to be have discipleship training... you can see that the Holy Spirit was absolutely present in their hearts.

Take Me As I Am...

I have been wrestling with some things as I prepare to head on mission to Ghana. The main thing is this - "WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?" What do I really have to offer my team and the people in Ghana? This is such a massive and important job and I'm well... me! I know that I have many faults: I have a hard time expressing my thoughts verbally, I have a short temper and when it comes to sharing God's Word... I have never been very good at memorizing anything. My entire team seems to be experienced in missions and evangelism. I am left wondering if maybe I misunderstood Him... when I heard "mission" maybe He really said "soup kitchen". Hmmm...

Today, one of my mentors pointed out an important piece of scripture: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28) It was pointed out to me that we often leave off the last half of that verse. He will work for the good, HIS good, if we love Him and are acting in accordance with His Will. If our hearts are aligned with God's heart... and we are focused on the things God is focused on... does it really matter that I am a poor speaker? Is that really going to affect God's plans? I am very small and minuscule when it comes to God's plans... but I am a part of God's plans nonetheless. "...Shall what is formed say to Him who formed it 'Why did you make me like this?'" (Romans 9:20) This isn't about what Connie will do in Ghana, it is about what GOD will do in Ghana. There is a reason I am going... He has a plan for me, with all my faults and failures, He wants me there I am asking God to "take me as I am" and to transform me into what He needs me to be, not that I may be glorified, but that HE may be glorified. "Take me as I am 'cause I'm growing. I was too scared to start, now I'm too scared to let go." (- FM Static)

Not Enough...

CHRISTIAN. Why do some people see this word and want to stop reading right now? Why might some settle down in their easy chair and want to read further? Why is it that one word can cause such great division in a community, in a family and even in a church?

A few weeks ago, something happened at work that really got me thinking. How can you refuse to help someone or care for someone because "something" about the situation is against your religion? Seriously?! Did Jesus refuse to help anyone in scripture "because"...? No! Many of the very people the healed and helped were the sinners and outcasts from society. How can one claim to be a Christian in one breath then refuse to help someone in need in the next? Thank you Katy, for reminding us of this important point that I initially negated to mention... not every Christian is like this. In fact, most solid Christians are not. However, I believe this is where the division about the term "Christian" lives... when a person claims they are Christian but they don't live a life depicting it.

"For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account". - Hebrews 4:12-13.

We are not the ones who are supposed to be judging and doing the dividing, it's God that is doing the dividing based on the attitudes of our hearts and our actions. Let's not think for one second that God only sees the "Jesus fish" on the back of our cars and identifies us as Christians. He sees the deepest depths of our hearts and can separate even thought and attitude... whoa! We better understand what is at stake here. For those of us that are "Christian", we have to be fervent about living our faith in every instance and situation.

It's good to believe God is real, but it's not enough, "even the demons believe that - and they shudder at His Name" (James 2:19). It's good to attend church and be connected with his Word but it's not enough, "not everyone who says to me 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father, who is in heaven" (Matthew 7:21). We have to be active, faithful, obedient, productive, growing, expanding and connected to Christ in order for us to be true followers of Christ. We have to purge out all our sinful tendencies, set our hearts of following Christ and then get our hands dirty with his Work. We have to get out of our Sunday attire, put on our boots, roll up our sleeves, put our comforts behind us and step into the enemy's territory to reach those that are needing God the most. That is where God's work really is...

Surprise!!!

Kurt arranged for a surprise party for my birthday, all the way from Iraq! :) He got ahold of John and Emily, who in turn got ahold of all our other friends. John grilled some burgers, there was cake and they even skyped Kurt in for the event (even though it was the middle of the night for him). These guys are amazing! Above, is Barbara, Katy and little Reese, enjoying the view of the Bay from John and Emily's balcony. Below, is John, our grill master and host :)
I can't believe they were able to plan all this and for me not to have any idea! There were so many people involved and no one spilled the beans!
Did I mention how AMAZING our friends are here?! They really did make my birthday a special one. The view from John and Emily's.
Pretty little Zorianna...
David and Kelley...
The birthday girl with Barbara and Emily...Thank you Kurt, John, Emily and everyone who came to celebrate! You guys are such a blessing. Thank you for making my day such a special one!!!

James J. Mines' Celebration of Life

My grandpa, James Joseph Mines, passed away last week at the age of 92. While we are sad to lose such a loved and prominent member of our family, we find joy in knowing he is at rest with our Lord, with Grandma and all our other loved ones who have moved on before us. He was a farmer, rancher, outfitter, inventor, teacher and a friend to all. Grandpa was also an army officer in World War II and was taken as a Prisoner of War, twice. We have all learned so much from him about what the true treasures in life are.
After the funeral, we got together as a family to celebrate Grandpa's memory. We enjoyed some food and fellowship - some of the Mines' favorite things! Jim and Kristine: Doug with our cousin, Patrick. These two think so much alike, it's scary :) My sister, Kris, and her daughter, Samantha:
Thank you to all our friends and family who came to celebrate Grandpa's life with us. To those who were unable to make it, thank you for all your thoughts, prayers, flowers, cards and phone calls.
My aunt and cousins outside enjoying the break from a Wyoming/Montana winter; Kelly, Bobbie, Jamie, Sarah and Tiffany: The Mathern Crew; Waylon, Alex, Uncle Ken, Aunt Marilyn, Patrick, Marty and Jerry: My dad with my brothers and I at Cave Creek Cemetery:
The family of James and Florence Mines:
My dad's cousin, Shirley, picking oranges and lemons at Grandpa's house: Dad and I: You've heard of "Find Waldo"... but can you find Jim and Doug?? Picking oranges in Grandpa's tree... one more time.
We love you Grandpa and we look forward to the day when we see you again!
